Issues associated with e-Learning

Wing noted that schools spend all their time and money on things like hardware, and not on health and safety, and issues like plagiarism. David noted that this might because hardware looks good - health and safety doesn't. Lisa mentioned that programmes like "turnitin.com" help combat e-plagiarism.

How are teachers using computers?

Wing was talking about how teachers were using computers in their teaching. Bill noted that he liked the tame or exploit distinction, and asked what teachers did. Keryn noted that she hadn't seen this distinction before, and that she liked it - and would perhaps also add survive.

ICT in schools

Wing talked about the different waves of technology use in education - computer as tutor, as tutee, as tool, multimedia and internet, and Web 2.0.

Jane noted that you still see all of these ways in classrooms. I asked whether that was necessarily a bad thing. Jane responded that it was bad only if there is no progress.

Web 2.0

Wing talked about the different ways of technology and learning that have occurred (computer at tutor, computer as tutee, computer as tool, multimedia & internet, web 2.0), and noted that the latest is Web 2.0. Jane wondered what would come after Web 2.0.

Teachers who use technology will replace those who don't

Wing mentioned a recent Chamber debate here at the university, where the topic under discussion was "That teachers who use technology will replace those who don't". Jane pointed out that the key word here is teacher - technology will not replace the teacher, but a teacher teaching with technology will.
